Summary

In November 2005 the Norfolk Archaeological Unit carried out an evaluation at Fairswell Manor, which revealed Iron Age to Roman features and finds, including pottery and coins. This suggests that this area was part of an Iron Age to Roman settlement. Medieval activity was also recorded on the site, as well as the remains of 19th century outbuildings.

November-December 2005.
Evaulation of two proposed development areas in grounds of Fairswell Manor. From context 1.
An NAU evaluation revealed Iron Age to Roman features and finds, suggesting that settlement activity extended into this area in the Iron Age to Roman period. Features included pits and postholes. The artefactual material, particularly butchery waste, recovered from one of these pits suggests the site was within or close to an Iron Age settlement. This area also appears to have fallen within the Roman settlement, as large quantities of Roman pottery were recovered from trenches at the southern end of the site.
Some evidence of medieval activity was found including a possible cesspit. However, Fairswell Manor does not appear to have had a medieval predecessor.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.266).
