Summary

A group of undated and fragmentary ditched cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs to the south of French’s Farm, Waxham. The site, which may include an incomplete rectilinear enclosure, consists of elements of a larger multi-phase cropmark site, which did not appear to be medieval to post medieval in date or part of NHER 42097. Although undated, it seems likely that many of these fragmentary ditches are pre-medieval in date, although the archaeological origin of all of the features is not certain and some may be geological, agricultural or drainage related.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of undated and fragmentary ditched cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs to the south of French’s Farm, Waxham (S1 and S2). The site is centred on TG 4386 2570. The site, which may include an incomplete rectilinear enclosure, consists of elements of a larger multi-phase cropmark site, which did not appear to be medieval to post medieval in date, or part of NHER 42097. Although undated, it seems likely that many of these fragmentary ditches are pre-medieval in date.

Centred on TG 4393 2571 is a possible incomplete enclosure, defined at the southern end by a double-ditched boundary, measuring approximately 30m across and up to 37m in length. The double-ditched end is slightly curvilinear and it may be associated with the curvilinear L-shaped ditch to the north. Other slightly curvilinear elements are visible within the site, including a ditch running from TG 4377 2563 to TG 4376 2566. A slightly angular C-shaped ditch is centred on TG 4396 2576. The archaeological origin of some of these features is slightly dubious, as the field has background cropmark ‘noise’ created by the underlying geological deposits, and it is also possible that some cropmarks are related to drainage.
