Summary

Two possible banks of unknown date and function are visible as earthworks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs taken in 1945. The two banks, one of which is cut by a modern drain, could relate in some way to the drainage and/or agricultural use of the area. They could instead be temporary features caused by recent agricultural activity.

Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible banks are visible as earthworks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs taken in 1945 (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 4509 2267. Their date and function is unknown, but they probably relate to the drainage and agricultural use of the area, whether before or after its drainage and enclosure in the post medieval period. The northern bank is cut by what appears to be a modern drain, suggesting a pre-20th century date for the banks. Alternatively, the earthworks and vegetation marks might be the product of recent agricultural activity; their absence from later aerial photographs of the area makes it difficult to confirm their archaeological origin. It is notable that both banks partly overlie an area of slightly higher ground and better drained soil.
