Full Description
December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Drainage ditches and a probable trackway are visible as cropmarks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs (S1), (S2), (S3) and (S4), centred at TG 4608 2229. Several of the mapped features correspond with or join to boundaries depicted on 19th century maps, suggesting that they are of post medieval date. The probable trackway, visible between TG 4615 2242 and TG 4608 2228, continues the line of the road or track to its north which is itself depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps, including the 1 inch map of 1838 (S5). (This road is not, however, shown on Horsey Tithe Map (1840) (S6) suggesting it is of mid-19th century date). Similarly, the ditch visible between TG 4613 2242 and TG 4601 2236 probably corresponds with a boundary depicted on Horsey Enclosure Map (S7), and both it and the ditch to its north join to boundaries on the Tithe and Enclosure Maps (S6) and (S7). Some of these drainage ditches may relate to the drainage of a large pond or pool depicted in this approximate area on both Faden and Bryant’s maps of Norfolk (S8) and (S9). This pond could itself be a product of the extraction of peat or clay in the medieval period (S10).
It should be noted that many cropmarks visible in the vicinity of the site have not been mapped as part of the NMP. Most are former drains and boundaries adequately depicted on historic maps such as Horsey Tithe Map (S6). Others appear to be channels of natural origin.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 6 December 2005.
