Summary

Two probable drains, most likely to be of post medieval date, are visible as slight earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs. They are not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps (which are mainly of 19th century date) but have the appearance of being post medieval or even modern drains.

Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable drains are visible as vegetation marks and (in the case of the southern ditch) slight earthworks (now probably levelled) on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 4635 2244. They are not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as Horsey Tithe Map (S3) or the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch (S4), but their linearity suggests that they date to the post medieval period. They could perhaps be underdrains (whether of bush or tile type) dating to the late post medieval or even modern period. The may have been necessitated by the fact that this approximate area was formerly occupied by a pond, depicted on Faden's Map of Norfolk (S5) (see NHER 42209).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 6 December 2005.
