Map

November 2005. Found in garden of house when digging soakaway for new garage.
Ditch, running east to west. West section of trench has half of V-shaped ditch with fill of light soft brown soil with many worm holes. Depth of trench 1.07m, base of ditch at about this level. Exposed section of trench 1.07m across at depth of 300mm, 900mm across at depth of 700mm. To south, dome of natural chalk 700mm north to south, beyond which is apparent start of second parallel ditch. East to west length exposed 1.90m. In floor of trench, cut in base of ditch, 290mm from west end of trench and 100mm from north face, a post hole or pit approximately 600mm wide, cut into chalk, only 300mm of fill removed. In soil removed generally from trench were found a Neolithic flint flaked axe with flattened side and grey patina; one tripointed scraper, and two flakes. Further identifications to come. These may be from the fill of the ditch but this is not certain.
Finder reports another ditch at right angles, north to south, further east; this was not seen.
Compare NHER 1947, pit with pot dated as Iron Age in nearby garden from pit in chalk.
