Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of cropmark field boundaries or drains of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs, within an area of arable land to the north of the Waxham New Cut (NHER 35366) near Lam Bridge, Sea Palling (S1 and S2). The site is centred on TG 4283 2559. These features are located within an area of possibly late medieval to post medieval field boundaries and trackways (NHER 42038), although the two sites are clearly not of the same date. As these cropmarks linears are completely opposed to the regular post medieval layout, it could be suggested that these pre-date NHER 42038.
The cropmarks consist of fragmentary linears that appear to suggest a curvilinear ladder arrangement, which opens out to the southeast, from 50m wide to 140m, with internal dividing ditches. It is possible that additional archaeological features are present. The whole of this field was filled with rectilinear and irregular cropmarks, which appeared to largely be geological in origin. The only features which were mapped were those which appeared to be more regular.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
