Summary

A dispersed and fragmentary group of cropmarks of unknown, but possibly Romano-British date, is visible on aerial photographs to the south of Stalham Road, Sea Palling. The site possibly represents part of a field system and a rectilinear enclosure. The site is located on the slightly higher ground, upon which the modern Sea Palling village sits, above the lower-lying wetter, former common marshes to the south.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A dispersed and fragmentary group of cropmarks of unknown, but possible Romano-British date, is visible on aerial photographs to the south of Stalham Road, Sea Palling (S1 to S3). The site is centred on TG 4215 2671, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. The site possibly represents part of a field system and a rectilinear enclosure. Although no dating evidence for these features exists, it is possible that they are Romano-British in date. The site is located on the slightly higher ground, upon which the modern Sea Palling village sits, above the lower-lying wetter, former common marshes to the south.

Centred on TG 4232 2679 is an area of rectilinear cropmarks which, although fragmentary, could represent part of a sub-divided enclosure, measuring approximately 55m by at least 18m. A pair of parallel ditches, possibly representing a trackway, appears to be aligned with this possible enclosure. The remainder of the site possibly represents a field system, with possible field boundaries, broadly aligned northeast to southwest, with perpendicular ditches running in between. Some of these sub-dividing ditches appear to enclose quite small areas, such as at TG 4226 2668, which would potentially measure 40m by 29m, if all the ditches are contemporary to one another.

The Monument Polygon defining the site has been expanded slightly to include an additional ditch (at TG 4203 2651). This had been mapped in 2005 but not included within the Monument Polygon, presumably due to an oversight.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk County Council, Historic Environment Service), 4 May 2020.
