Summary

The soilmarks of a former curvilinear field boundary bank are visible on aerial photographs, within the arable land between Barton Farm and Stalham Road, Sea Palling. The boundary is possibly late medieval or early post medieval in date, as the course of this bank appears to be cut through by a rectilinear post medieval enclosure and tracks that are marked on the 1839 Palling Tithe map.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a former curvilinear field boundary bank are visible on aerial photographs, within the arable land between Barton Farm and Stalham Road, Sea Palling (S1). The boundary is possibly late medieval or early post medieval in date, as the course of this bank appears to be cut through by a rectilinear post medieval enclosure and tracks that are marked on the 1839 Palling Tithe map (S2).

The site is centred on TG 4183 2690 and the bank runs from TG 4167 2691 to TG 4198 2686, measuring 320m long in total. The soilmark is 7 to 9m wide, although this may not be reflective of the original width of the bank and may be a product of the soilmark and spreading of the bank material by the plough.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
