Summary

The cropmarks and soilmarks of a series of irregular and curvilinear late medieval to post medieval field boundaries and drains are visible on aerial photographs, to the west of Keith Farm, Sea Palling. These features have been superseded by a rectilinear enclosure by the time the Palling Tithe map was produced in 1839; see NHER 24131 for mapped boundaries.

Map

September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks and soilmarks of a series of irregular and curvilinear late medieval to post medieval field boundaries and drains are visible on aerial photographs, to the west of Keith Farm, Sea Palling (S1 to S3). The site is centred on TG 4206 2739 although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground.

A curvilinear double-ditched boundary, drain or trackway runs from TG 4196 2743 to TG 4214 2745. The ditches are between 5.5 and 7.5m apart. To the north of this are several other rough parallel curvilinear ditches or drains. An L-shaped perpendicular boundary or drain is attached at the western end of the double ditched feature. This feature is cut by a drain associated with the later post medieval enclosure, some of the boundaries of which are visible on the aerial photographs from 2002 (S3) and are consistent with those marked on the 1839 Palling Tithe map (S4). These later boundaries are recorded under NHER 42131. To the south a channel with an irregular course runs from TG 4210 2737 to TG 4206 2721, this drain is likely to have been derived from a natural creek. To the southwest of the site is an additional drain/boundary which appears to form part of the same layout.
