Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork of a rectangular enclosure and platform, of probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are centred on TG 4889 0631. The enclosure is sub-rectangular in plan, is defined by a narrow ditch and measures up to 40m by 37m externally. Internally it comprises of a raised platform measuring 37m by 35m. The position of this enclosure in the marshland indicates that it is of medieval to post medieval date. A barn was present to the north of the enclosure and was shown on both the second edition 25" to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S3) and the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map (S4). The south and east sides of the enclosure are also marked on the tithe map. It is possible that the barn was the remains of an earlier farmstead. The enclosure and platform visible as earthworks could have been a stock enclosure or paddock, or perhaps a building platform for the farmhouse or other structures. The remaining barn was still present in 1980, but it is unclear if the earthworks were still extant at that date (S5).
