Full Description
December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of three large World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 5044 0393. The shelters were located alongside the school (now a community centre) and library on the intersection of Church Lane and Lord’s Lane in Bradwell. These large earth covered shelters were presumably provided for the staff and pupils of the two establishments, and also the residents of nearby streets. The largest of the three shelters was located to the immediate west of the library and consisted of an angular shaped mound, measuring approximately 18m by 10m, with three entrances; two elongated slots and one square cut. This plot has since been redeveloped and is now 15 Lord’s Lane. To the south of this located on the edge of a strip of allotments were two smaller rectangular elongated shelters, both approximately 18m by 5m and each with two elongated slot entrances. These shelters are still extant in 1951 (S2). No definite sign of the two rectangular shelters can be identified on aerial photographs from 1980 (S3), although it is possible that some subsurface elements still remain as the plot does not appear to have been redeveloped.
