Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of two large pits, probably sand pits, and associated ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 4861 0518. The largest of the pits is present on the western side of the group and has an irregular plan measuring up to 37m by 35m. The second large pit gas an irregular sub-oval plan and measures 29m by 22m. It is likely that they are sand pits but as they are not marked on the Burgh Castle tithe (S4) or later maps, their date is unknown. Between these two pits is a group of five smaller pits measuring up to 5m by 2m. The function of these smaller pits is unknown. To the north and south of the pits are west to east aligned parallel ditches. It is likely that these are boundary ditches defining the area in which the sand extraction or other activity was taking place. The date of these extractive pits is not known, but they could be of post medieval or earlier in origin.
