NHER 42241 (Monument record) - Site of World War Two bomb craters at Gorleston-on-Sea

A group of three World War Two bomb craters are visible in 1944 on aerial photographs to the north of the anti aircraft battery (NHER 32667) at Gorleston-on-Sea (S1)-(S2). The site is centred on TG 5167 0496, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. These craters may relate to the bombing raids on Great Yarmouth during the war or more specifically to attempts to destroy the anti aircraft site to the immediate south.

Two almost overlapping craters are located at TG 5166 0504 and a third is located to the south at TG 5169 0486.

Survey of proposed development area.
This survey identified two strong discrete dipolar responses that appear to correspond with the two northernmost probable craters. Although there was no evidence for the southernmost crater this part of the site was largely obscured by extensive magnetic disturbance likely to represent rubble and other debris distributed during the demolition of several school buildings.
