Summary

A group of possible World War Two weapons pits is visible on aerial photographs from 1946, to the west of the Beccles Road, nearby the Anti-Aircraft Battery (NHER 32667) Gorleston. The military origin of these features is suggested by their appearance, however the potentially late date and location of these excavations could indicate an agricultural origin.

Map

December 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of possible World War Two weapons pits is visible on aerial photographs from 1946 (S1), to the west of the Beccles Road, nearby the Anti-Aircraft Battery (NHER 32667) Gorleston. The site is centred on TG 5122 0449. These three pits get dug in-between March 1944 and March 1946 (S1-S2). The military origin of these features is suggested by their appearance, however the potentially late date of these excavations could indicate an agricultural origin.

The pits are located at TG 5120 0452, TG 5124 0450 and TG 5121 0446. The southernmost pit is noticeably rectangular in shape, 2m by 1.5m, and the up-cast material appears to have been placed into an oblong mound. The other two pits are slightly more irregular in plan.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2005.
