Full Description
Interesting late example of a timber framed agricultural building. Weatherboarded on brick plinth with loft hatch in gable and later large door in gable wall; later brick side extension. Interior has visible wide set studwork with straight footbracing from sillbeam to corner posts which are not jowled. Loft floor supported on arched braces rising to hammerbeam like arrangement which at first floor supports queenposts rising to lofted tiebeams. This is similar to other examples where the ground floor is used for animals or carts and the loft for storage of grain in bins between the divisions to each side, with central walkway. However the details shown on (S1) in file suggest a very late date in this case although the building is shown on (S2) and possibly on (S3), although this is unclear. Illustrates the late survival of timber framing.
The adjacent canal like leat is no more than a dry ditch on (S2) and (S3) and the building is unlikely to have been connected with water transport.
Proposed conversion to dwelling retaining all original features.
