An area of World War Two bomb damage is visible on aerial photographs on Riverside Road, West Quay, Gorleston (S1-S2). The shelter is centred on TG 5259 0465. The bombing took place after 10th February 1941 (S1) and before 13th May 1944 (S2), as series of quayside buildings were destroyed. In 1945 (S3) a series of building foundations are visible to the south of the site, but unlike those structures to the north, this are not visible as standing building in the earlier aerial photographs (S1). Nothing is clearly visible at this location in oblique aerial photographs from September 1940 (S4), however the exact spot is largely obscured by shadows. It is therefore possible that this is evidence of very early bombing, which started in this area in July 1940 (S5: p13-5). Although the fact that the rest of the structures survived in tact, suggest that the foundations relate pre-war building demolition of the structure marked on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition map (1902-7, 25") (S6).
