Full Description
1909. Stray Find.
Found on Mousehold Heath:
1 quartzite pebble hammer, with depression on each side. Donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1971.697). Listed in (S1). Stone implement petrology N.86 (quartzite); see (S2) (in which it is described as a partially perforated pebble hammer). Information from (S3).
It is possible that this object is an unfinished example of what would now be described as a pebble mace. These objects are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 July 2013.
