The soilmarks described below were previously recorded as NHER 17153.
A group of mainly linear and rectilinear soilmarks is visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S3), centred at TG 4782 2120. The complex arrangement of marks at the west end of the site has been interpreted as several enclosures, possibly representing settlement (see NHER 17153). Linear ditches, often two or more in parallel, which lead eastwards and northeastwards, may be contemporary trackways. The northeastern trackway, visible as several segments between TG 4757 2105 and TG 4774 2125, may be aligned on a ditch 91m to its northeast This forms part of the medieval to post medieval drainage system recorded as NHER 42360, and it is possible that the trackway, and perhaps the other mapped soilmarks, were contemporary features. At the same time, the soilmarks are visible on aerial photographs from only one year and their general appearance is unconvincing. Many lie parallel to modern agricultural marks, and the northeastern trackway leads to a field corner at its southwest end. A recent agricultural origin for many or all of the soilmarks is very likely.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 13 January 2006.
