Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of undated, possibly medieval to post medieval, curvilinear ditches or channels are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These earthworks are centred on TG 4596 0735 in an area of former marshland. In the north of the group is a section of wide curvilinear ditch or channel that is cut by an extant drainage ditch. The extant ditch is marked on the 1839 Halvergate tithe map (S2) indicating that the curvilinear ditch is of an earlier date. Two narrow curvilinear ditches are present to its south. It is likely that all of these ditches had their origins as natural channels and that they were later adapted to form part of the drainage system, possibly in the medieval to post medieval period.
J. Albone (NMP), 17 January 2006.
