Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of two curvilinear post medieval hollow ways or possibly former channels are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Calthorpe Broad, Ingham (S1). The site is centred on TG 4094 2633. The site consists of two irregular shaped sunken linear features, which have the appearance of being hollow ways. The eastern feature heads towards the line of a trackway and drain, the line of which appears to be marked on Faden’s map of 1797 (S2). This could indicate that this hollow way earthwork represents a former continuation of the trackway. However given the location on the edge of the former alluvial fen areas at the margins of the Thurne Valley, these sunken linears may be the remains of former drainage channels. The western sunken linear also heads towards the confluence of three drains.
The eastern sunken channel runs from TG 4091 2648 to TG 4099 2629. It is up to 19m wide at its northern end, the rest being 6-7m wide. A post medieval/modern drain marked on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition map (1902 to 1907, 25 inch) (S3) cuts this channel. The western channel runs from TG 4091 2643 to TG 4093 2617 and is more narrow, ranging from 4m-8.5m wide. This may have originally joined the eastern channel at its widest point, however the earthworks do not reveal the relationship.
