Summary

Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches or channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. The linear ditches are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. It is likely that the curvilinear ditches originated as natural channels, but they may have been incorporated into the drainage pattern during the medieval or post medieval period.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches or channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-2). These earthworks are centred on TG 4720 0960 in an area of former marshland. Two sections of linear drainage ditch on a roughly west to east alignment are present in the southern part of the group. Although these ditches are not marked on the 1839 Runham tithe map (S3) it is likely that they are of post medieval date. A third section of banked drainage ditch further to the north at TG 4715 0974, is marked on the 1839 map. To the northeast of this ditch at TG 4738 0982 is a curving ditch that bifurcates at its eastern end. It is likely that this is also a drainage ditch of medieval to post medieval date. Curvilinear ditches or channels are present in the northwest and southeast areas of this group of earthworks. It is likely that these features originated as natural channels, but they may have been incorporated into the drainage pattern during the medieval or post medieval period.

April 2008-June 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new soke dyke as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 11).
Although the new dyke coincided with a pair of sinuous north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear earthworks at TG 4694 0979 no corresponding remains were identified.
See report (S4) and NHER 69631 for further details.
