Summary

A soilmark and/or cropmark visible on aerial photographs probably marks the site of a former pond. The date of the pond is unknown and it is not depicted on any of the historic maps consulted. Like similar ponds in the surrounding area, it may have been associated with the use of the marshes for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable pond is visible as a cropmark and/or soilmark on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5054 0980. Although it has the appearance of a mound on some of the aerial photographs, comparison with the marks of nearby creeks suggests that this was a negative feature. Its date is unknown, as it is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, which are mainly of 19th century date. It may therefore pre-date the maps and date to the 18th century or earlier. It might perhaps have been associated with the use of the area for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods. It is surrounded by the sinuous crop- or soilmarks of former creeks; these appear to have been natural features and consequently have not been mapped by the NMP.

A number of very similar ponds have been identified less than 1km to the east of the one described here. Some, such as NHER 42418, are partially or fully infilled features which may pre-date the 19th century maps. Others appear to be modern features, or at least have remained in use into the modern period, and consequently they have not been mapped by the NMP.
