Summary

A circular structure, of possible World War Two date, is visible on aerial photographs on the South Pier, Gorleston. The exact function and date of this structure is unknown, but it is possible that it is the outer casing of a circular gun emplacement or pillbox. However it is also possible that this construction does not relate to the military defences or activity on the pier and may have be associated with the loading or mooring of boats within the harbour.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A circular structure, of possible World War Two date, is visible on aerial photographs on the South Pier, Gorleston (S1 and S2). The site is centred on TG 5337 0370. In 1940 to 1941, a small circular structure is visible located to the west of the South Pier battery (NHER 33953). This consists of a roofless 5m diameter concrete shell. This has been removed by July 1944 (S3). The exact function and date of this structure is not known, it is possible that it is the outer casing of a circular gun emplacement or pillbox. The circular shape could have indicated a World War One pillbox, however the structure is not present on aerial photographs of the pier taken in 1928 (S4). It is possible that this construction does not relate to the military defences or activity on the pier and may have been associated with the loading or mooring of boats within the harbour.
