Summary

A group of World War Two structures is visible on aerial photographs on the South Pier, Gorleston. The function of these is unknown, but it is possible that they were related to the defence of the harbour and quayside, although it seems more likely that they were for storage of military equipment and supplies that needed to be transported by boat.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two structures is visible on aerial photographs on the South Pier, Gorleston (S1). These structures were constructed between February 1941 and 1944 (S1 and S2). The function of these is unknown, but it is possible that they were related to the defence of the harbour and quayside, although it seems more likely that they were for storage of military equipment and supplies that needed to be transported by boat. The whole of the South Pier has evidence for the loading and storage of equipment. The site is centred on TG 5307 0364, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground.

A rectangular concrete structure, 9.5m by 7m, is located at TG 5303 0365. Further along the pier at TG 5309 0362 are two huts; one is flat roofed and measures 20m by 6.5m and the other one, 16m by 7.5m, has a curved profile, and therefore may be a nissen hut or similar design.
