Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox and spigot mortar emplacement are visible on aerial photographs on the West Quay, Gorleston (S1) to (S4). These structures would have formed part of the harbour and quayside defences. The structures are located either side of two boat slip ways, centred on TG 5298 0389.
The pillbox was a type 22 and was located at TG 5298 0388. This appears to have been constructed inbetween September 1940 and February 1941 (S1). The spigot mortar emplacement was at TG 5298 0390 and consisted of a circular spigot within a circular pit. This gun emplacement is not clearly visible in February 1941, but has definitely been constructed by 1944 (S2). The pillbox and spigot mortar emplacement are still visible in 1947 (S4), however both have been removed by 1952 (S5).
S. Massey (NMP), 23 January 2006.
