Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two emergency water supply tank is visible on wartime aerial photographs, located within an area of earlier bomb damage on the corner of Bell’s Road and Springfield Road, Gorleston (S1) to (S3). The site is centred on TG 5271 0354. In 1941 a row of houses is visible at this location (S1), by May 1944 the houses are been destroyed and a area of disturbed ground is visible (S2) and by August 1944 (S3) an emergency water tank has been placed in northeast corner of the site. The water tank is visible as an extent structure, measuring 7m in diameter. It is one of several tanks located within the area for the emergency use of fire fighters during bombing raids. The positioning of water tanks within areas of bomb damage occurs elsewhere in Gorleston, see NHER 42264, 42283 and 42315 for other sites.
