Summary

Earthworks of linear and curving ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. Some short sections of linear ditch appear to be cut by the adjacent railway line that was opened in 1844. Additional earthworks were recorded during a survey undertaken in 2023.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S4). These earthworks are centred on TG 4750 0674 in an area of former marshland to the north of Breydon Water. Linear and curvilinear ditch and channel earthworks are present on a range of different alignments. The longest of these is a linear ditch that extends for 535m on a southwest to northeast alignment. Its alignment is similar to that of an extant curvilinear drainage ditch to its northwest. A section of curving ditch is present in the northeastern part of the group of earthworks. This earthwork also mirrors the course of an extant curvilinear drainage ditch. Some short sections of linear ditch appear to be cut by the adjacent railway line that was opened in 1844. It is likely that these and the other ditch earthworks are of post medieval and medieval date.

January-February 2023. Earthwork Survey.
Analytical earthwork survey undertaken ahead of proposed habitat improvement works.
This survey recorded no surviving trace of the previously recorded curvilinear earthwork running between TG 4757 0715 and TG 4781 0705. Two north-east to south-west aligned linear earthworks were though recorded in the area immediately to the east (Field D; Features 10 and 11). The southern most of these is a significant ditch and bank with a total width of c.45m.
The northern end of the previously recorded feature running between TG 4766 0711 and TG 4732 0669 and the adjacent channel at TG 4766 0697 are both identifiable as surviving earthworks on the digital elevation model generated from the initial topographic survey. Neither fell within the areas subject to more detailed, interpretive surveys.
See report (S5) for further details.
The mapped extent of this record has been expanded slightly to encompass the linear earthworks recorded in the field centred at TG 4784 0718.
