Summary

Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. Some of these ditches were marked on the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map. It is likely that at least some of the curvilinear ditches originated as natural channels and were later incorporated into the drainage pattern.

Map

January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear and curvilinear drainage ditches and channels of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are centred on TG 4879 0563 in an area of former marshland. The linear ditches at TG 4873 0569 and TG 4882 0546 were shown on the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map (S3) as extant drainage ditches. However, other linear ditches within this group of earthworks are not marked on this map. It is likely that at least some of the curvilinear ditches originated as natural channels. These were later incorporated into the drainage pattern, possibly during the medieval period. However, none of these ditches were marked on the tithe map (S3). It is probable that these curvilinear and linear drainage ditches are of medieval to post medieval date.
