Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two pits, each surrounded by a bank of spoil, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1944 (S1), at TG 4917 1998 and TG 4917 1996. They lay on the western edge of an area of disturbed ground associated with a large military site on Winterton dunes (NHER 42444). The pits appear to have been freshly excavated and were presumably contemporary military features. They were probably weapons pits or gun emplacements, perhaps dug for practice given their rather remote location. Alternatively, they could have been bomb craters but the neatness of the surrounding banks would suggest that this is less likely. The site is now occupied by woodland and it is not known whether the pits still survive as earthworks.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 26 January 2006.
