Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval post mill and associated boundary ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). These cropmarks are centred on TG 4951 0495 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 11607. The cropmark of the post mill is located at TG 4951 0503. It comprises of a broad hengiform ring ditch with an external diameter of 26m. The ditch is up to 5m wide and has three gaps or entrances positioned on its southwest, northwest and northeast sides. In the centre is a cross-shaped ditch cropmark relating to the cross tree supports of the post mill. This mill is not marked on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S5) and is probably of medieval to early post medieval date.
An L-shaped linear ditch is present to the south and east of the post mill ring ditch. A third linear boundary ditch is present to the west of the mill. This ditch extends intermittently for 218m on a roughly north to south alignment. It is likely that these are boundary ditches associated with the mill. None of these ditches are shown on the 1843 Burgh Castle tithe map (S6) and they are also likely to be of medieval to early post medieval date.
