Full Description
January 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two gun emplacement or pillbox is visible on aerial photographs on Marine Parade, Gorleston-on-Sea (S1)-(S2). The concrete structure is positioned against the hedge in the front garden of 18 Marine Parade, opposite one of the slipways to the seafront. The structure is centred on TG 5287 0306 and is wedge-shaped, 3.5m across. The structure remains in the front garden as late as 1965 (S3), but it has been removed by 1978 (S4). This may have been a garden structure, although it seems a little too substantial a construction for a shed or summerhouse. It is therefore possible that this is a camouflaged gun position and was part of the coastal defences for this strip of coast.
S. Massey (NMP), 24 January 2006.
