September 2019. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension at rear of Staithe Garden Cottage.
The footing trenches excavated revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits+.
The topsoil contained rubble and other modern debris suggesting at least a degree of disturbance during the original construction of the cottage and the landscaping of its grounds. This mixed deposit did though seal a fairly deep, sterile and apparently undisturbed subsoil layer. Natural geological deposits were encountered at a depth of c.0.9m below ground level.
Finds were limited to a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe and a small number of modern objects.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.16).
P. Watkins (HES), 1 January 2024.
