Summary

Probable World War Two slit trenches are visible as earthworks in the gardens of two houses at Winterton on an aerial photograph taken in 1940. They may have been rudimentary air raid shelters used by the inhabitants of the houses. They are not visible on more recent aerial photographs and have presumably been levelled.

Map

February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Probable World War Two slit trenches are visible as earthworks on an aerial photograph taken in 1940 (S1), in the gardens of what are now Number 19 and Duneside, Bush Road, Winterton (at TG 4983 1895 and TG 4987 1888). These may have been rudimentary air raid shelters used by the inhabitants of the houses. Alternatively, they might have been recently created garden features. They are not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, and were presumably levelled during or soon after the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 8 February 2006.
