Map

December 2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
Archaeological potential includes the later medieval sea bank at the western boundary, the possibility that the earlier church serving West Lynn stood here, and the slight possibility that pre-flood activity took place here.
See report (S1) for further details.
J. Allen (NLA), 16 February 2006.

March 2006. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Twenty-four trenches excavated. Contexts 1-45.
The earliest deposits encountered were grey silts that represented the flooding of the site when it was marshland. In a few trenches, finds of post medieval date were recovered from these flood deposits that may represent dumping. In one trench, the remains of a timber jetty with chalk rubble infill was revealed at a depth of 3m to 3.5m. This is probably the same jetty shown on a 19th-century map. A worked flint that was possibly part of a Mesolithic or Early Neolithic blade core was also recovered.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.193).
J. Allen (NLA), 6 March 2006. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 June 2019.
