Map

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Linear group of cropmarks which appear to be ploughed out banks. There are five stretches of bank visible in a line, it is possible that they were originally all one bank, or part of the same boundary. The largest section is the northern, which is 105m long and up to 9m across, although the plough may have spread this. It is possible that these are remnants of hedge lines and field boundaries, dating from the post medieval enclosure of the Heacham common. This bank could also have acted to divide the saltmarsh common from more improved land, possibly even to defend it from any tidal incursions. A larger sea bank had been placed around the northwest edge of the common (NHER 26807), so it is possible that this feature acted in the same way.
S. Massey (NMP), 17 April 2002.
