Map

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Enclosed area defined by two 'Boomerang' shaped stretches of bank, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and Ordnance Survey verticals from 1967 (S2). The larger bank is constructed from TF 6626 3660 to TF 6623 3647. This bank is 150m long up to 10m wide. The line of this bank continues for an additional 25m to the southwest, although it is a lower and possible of a different build. The smaller, seaward/western bank is 120m long and 6.5m wide, running from TF 6623 3659 to TF 6622 3648. It is possible that this enclosed area is related to the World War Two defences on this stretch of saltmarsh, which includes two pillboxes and anti tank blocks (SMR, 23515-6, 32385). However, this feature does not look recently used or constructed on the 1946 RAF photography, suggesting that this is earlier in date. It is situated on the block of land between the sea and the Heacham Harbour channel, as marked on 18th century Enclosure maps of the area (S3) to (S4). It is possible that this enclosure relates to the medieval or post medieval workings of the harbour.
S. Massey (NMP), 22 April 2002.
