NHER 26860 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmark of post medieval sea bank

Cropmark of possible stretch of bank running alongside field boundary, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It is 115m long and 5m across. It may just relate to field boundaries, however reference to the 1797 Faden map (S2) indicates that it corresponds to part of a system of sea banks, which run from TF 6667 3745 up to point approximately 1.2km to the northeast at the Heacham River. The bank 26861 is also probably part of this scheme, also the banks included in 26837 and 26862 may be related. This phase of embanking the saltmarsh may have been as early as the late 17th century and is likely to be of the same phase of the NHER 26617, 26806-7 to the south.
