Map

April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Group of linear features running alongside a natural gully in the chalk, visible on 1988 BKS aerial photographs (S1). The main feature is a curvilinear ditch, running from TF 6907 3915 to TF 6872 3931. This boundary is appears to curve in and meet the natural gully to the west, so it is possible that this is another natural feature. Several other linears cross this possible ditch, which are almost perpendicular to it. These vary from 4 to 7m wide, however they are situated on the slope and may have been spread by the plough. Another linear feature runs from TF 6906 3950 to TF 6906 3903, at which point it meets the natural gully. This feature appears to continue on the other side until TF 6903 3920.
These features appear to be a set of ditches, possibly relating to the field system that is aligned and orientated upon the natural gully in the chalk, which leads into the Ringstead Downs valley. It may be this was used as a route of movement. These boundaries are probably medieval to post medieval in date, as they appear similar to other medieval features in the area, such as the boundaries associated with Ringstead Parva deserted medieval village (NHER 1115)
S. Massey (NMP), 23 April 2002.
