Full Description
April 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A group of mounds, possibly indicating medieval to post medieval salterns, are visible as both earthworks and vegetation marks on the saltmarsh at Snettisham (S1-S2). Nine low and amorphous shaped mounds are clustered around meanders in the water channels. The smallest being 15m by 6 and the largest measuring 60m by 42m. The location is now protected from the sea by a sea bank (NHER 26617), so it seems likely that they pre-date the construction of that line of defence. This bank is thought to be post-medieval in date, potentially dating to the late 17th and 18th centuries.
S. Massey (NMP), 15 April 2002.
August 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project (volunteer strand).
Parts of the medieval to post medieval salterns described above appear to still be visible as earthworks on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 (S3), but most appear to have been levelled by this date.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 12 August 2025.
