Summary

This complex of buildings are largely 19th century in date, and were used as workshops for the production of coffins. The ground floors of this timber-framed building are of flint and brick, the upper levels weatherboarded. When these building were first examined it was thought that at least some elements may pre-date the 19th century. This was confirmed by a more detailed survey undertaken in 2016, with one of the three main buildings shown to be of probable late 18th or early 19th-century origins. The two later buildings were probably erected in the mid 19th century.

July 2016. Building Survey.
Examination of former coffin factory buildings, ahead of proposed redevelopment of site.
The earliest element of the complex was found to be brick building in the north-east part of the site (Building 1), which has features (such of as tumbled-in brickwork in its gable) suggestive of a late 18th or early 19th-century date. It is much altered, although a room and window at the western end were probably original, along with an opening immediately to the east. It has some characteristics of an animal house with a hayloft, but could also have originated as a workshop. Two further buildings were added in the mid 19th century (Buildings 2 and 3), one of which incorporated the west wall of the earlier structure. These later buildings both had first-floor workshops constructed entirely from wood.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 March 2025.
