Summary

A possible World War Two pillbox is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs. It was located close to what was formerly North Gorleston Junction, on the west side of the point at which what is now Boundary Road was crossed by the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway (NHER 13575). If the structure was a pillbox, it would have formed part of a chain of anti invasion defences sited along the landward side of Great Yarmouth to protect both the town and its transport links. The structure was removed by 1945 and the site is now part of an industrial park.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two pillbox is visible as an extant structure, and subsequently the impression left by its demolition or removal, on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5201 0601. The small circular or polygonal structure has been mapped by the NMP as stonework but could have been built of less substantial material. It is not clearly visible, but its general character, its location, the fact that it is not depicted on the consulted historic maps (for example (S4)) and that it was removed before August 1945 (S3) suggests that it was a World War Two defence, probably a pillbox. More recent aerial photographs and modern mapping indicate that the site is now occupied by an industrial park and there is no evidence that any element of the World War Two structure still survives.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 8 March 2006.
