Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1944-5 (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5280 0663. They lay in the open space behind houses on Pier Place, Camden Road, Queen’s Road and Havelock Road. They were perhaps used by the residents of houses on Pier Place, to which they were closest. They are visible as a line of earthwork mounds, several of which are joined making the number of shelters difficult to assess. Disturbed ground visible in the southwest corner of the open area (at approximately TG 5276 0661) may mark the site of further shelters, but these were not clear enough to identify with any certainty and consequently have not been mapped. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any remnant of the shelters now survives above ground and they were probably levelled soon after the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 13 March 2006.
