Summary

A curving linear ditch visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, and a corresponding bank visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data, probably mark the line of a medieval to post medieval road depicted on a 17th-century map. The features may also have acted as a field boundary. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2018), it is likely that the earthwork still survives.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a curving linear ditch, probably a medieval field boundary, is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is centred on TF 7285 3582. A slightly curving linear ditch is present. It extends for at least 310m on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment between TF 7275 3592 and TF 7295 3569. The alignment of this ditch continues to the southeast as a step in the Sedgeford and Fring parish boundary. It follows that line of a road marked along an estate map of Sedgeford dating to 1631 (S2). It is likely that the boundary ditch, and road, are of medieval date.
J. Albone (NMP), 08 March 2006.

April 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project (volunteer strand).
A curving linear bank visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S3) corresponds with the ditch described above. As suggested above, this probably marks the road depicted on the 17th-century estate map (S2). On the lidar visualisations it can be seen to cross – or be crossed by or conjoined with – an east-to-west orientated bank, probably a medieval to post medieval field or furlong boundary, recorded as part of NHER 68569. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is likely that the earthwork still survives.
