Summary

Linear ditches of unknown date, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, are probably field boundaries. Their orientation is at odds with that of 19th century field boundaries depicted on historic maps, indicating that they are almost certainly pre-19th century in date. Their alignment is also not shared by any of the field systems and field boundaries of various dates which have been identified to the west (e.g. NHER 43400 and 13073). A possible trackway and further field boundaries to the southwest (NHER 43404 and 43403 respectively), which do share their alignment, may be contemporary features.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 4997 1839. Their general character suggests that they probably represent field boundaries, but their date is not known. They cut across field boundaries depicted on historic maps, such as Winterton Tithe Map (S4), indicating that they are probably of pre-19th century date, but also do not share their orientation with field systems and boundaries of various dates identified to their west, such as NHER 43400 and 13073. Additional linear ditches, possibly defining a trackway and further field boundaries, visible as cropmarks 160m and 410m to the southwest (NHER 43404 and 43403 respectively), share the alignment of the site described here and could be contemporary features. Part of the postulated trackway may be depicted on Hemsby Enclosure Map (S5), and a medieval to early post medieval date for all three sites seems plausible.
