Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures and linear ditches of unknown, possibly Roman, date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TF 7240 3575 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 36145. A group of at least ten rectilinear enclosures are present on north to south and west to east alignments. A rectangular enclosure that measures 32m by 23m in size is present at the eastern end of the group. It has narrow enclosures, which are up to 4m wide, along its north and east sides. Adjoining these to the west are three more rectangular enclosures that measure up to 77m by 23m in size. Further incomplete enclosure or field boundary ditches are present in the western part of the group. Some of the west to east aligned cropmark ditches present appear to correspond to field boundaries marked on a 1631 estate map of Sedgeford (S2) and may be of medieval to post medieval date. However, the majority of the ditches are not marked on that map and are of an unknown, possibly Roman, date. Other enclosure cropmarks on a similar alignment are present further to the south (NHER 43371).
J. Albone (NMP), 15 March 2006.
