Summary

Earthworks of linear ditches forming a trapezoidal enclosure of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. This enclosure is located adjacent to the Heacham River and it is likely that the ditches also served a drainage function. The enclosure is not marked on an estate map of Sedgeford that dates to 1631.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of linear ditches forming a trapezoidal enclosure of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are centred on TF 7062 3636. The enclosure is defined by earthwork ditches on its west, south and east sides with its northern side formed by the Heacham River. Internally it measures at least 63m by 60m. The position of this enclosure, close to the river, means that the ditches probably also served a drainage function. The southern edge of this enclosure appears to align with a medieval ditch further to the east (NHER 39459). These ditches are not marked on an estate map of Sedgeford that dates to 1631 (S3) but are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date.
