Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4845 1806. It is only just visible on a single aerial photograph, and consequently its archaeological origin is uncertain. If it does represent an archaeological site, this is most likely to have been a prehistoric burial mound, given the proximity of several other ring ditches and the general character of the site. This was presumably a Bronze Age round barrow, although possible Neolithic oval barrows have been identified nearby, including NHER 15514 173m to the west. The ring ditch is surrounded by the cropmarks of a multi-period field system (NHER 43426); two of the linear ditches that make up the field system give the impression of having truncated the north side of the ring ditch and they presumably post-date it.
The ring ditch is roughly circular in shape and measures approximately 20m in diameter. A gap in the ditch circuit on its north side may reflect truncation by later activity (as discussed above) rather than the presence of a genuine causeway.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 March 2006.
