Summary

Field boundaries of unknown date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Their varying orientation suggests that more than one phase of activity is represented. They could date to any period, from the prehistoric to the post medieval. Some probably correspond with field boundaries depicted on 19th century Tithe Maps.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of field boundaries are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5), centred at TG 5086 1623. They are undated but variations in the orientation of the ditches, and the way in which they cross over each other, suggests that more than one phase of activity is represented. Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and post medieval material has been recovered from the surrounding area (NHER 37184, 35309, 35637 and 34685, for example), perhaps indicating dates for some elements of the site. Some of the ditches, including most of that visible between TG 5092 1610 and TG 5081 1615, appear to correspond with boundaries depicted on the parish Tithe Maps (S6)-(S7). This indicates that they were in use in the later post medieval period, although they may have had an earlier origin. Some of the ditches may define trackways, between TG 5073 1641 and TG 5075 1631, or between TG 5097 1630 and TG 5092 1616, for example. The relationship between the boundaries described here and the possible boundary bank identified approximately 120m to the north (NHER 43440) is not known, but the shared orientation between the bank and some of the ditches may indicate that they are contemporary features.

It should be noted that, due to a lack of control points on the relevant aerial photographs, the ditches in the northwest corner of the site were predominantly sketched from photographs that were not fully rectified. This may have affected the accuracy of the mapping.
