Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
An undated trackway, flanked by ditches on each side, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 4990 1697. Ditches and a bank visible to its northwest, which are aligned parallel or at 90 degrees to it, are probably associated field boundaries. The date of the features is not known. They are not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as Hemsby Enclosure Map (S5), and their orientation is at odds with that of an extensive field system of probable post Roman date identified approximately 100m to the south (NHER 17673). The trackway may once have joined to a second length of track visible 225m to its northeast (NHER 43444), and might also perhaps have joined to Short Lane, depicted on the Enclosure Map approximately 60m to its southwest (now part of Newport Road). In the northwest corner of the site the cropmarks are overlapped by part of a World War Two military site (NHER 27370).

It should be noted that the cropmarks were not always easily distinguishable from the background geology of the site or from marks caused by recent agricultural activity. Consequently, there is a risk that some of the mapped features are of non-archaeological origin.
